Do something without purpose

Perhaps one of the most difficult things for me to do is to do something without purpose. For example, I could sit in front of a screen and just start typing letters until they become words and then sentences. What would be the point of that?

And just that quickly, I run into an obstacle–a productivity obstacle.

Must there be a point to everything we do? Oh I know such thinking won’t win awards or garner digital attention. Yet somehow, it strikes me as important to sometimes engage in activity without aim, without ulterior motive. Perhaps awareness can be found in such an approach. But writing about awareness isn’t my aim or even my point in mentioning it.

It seems to me that something important–something human–activates, when we indulge in a task for the sake of the task. No boast, no apology–just effort. Human effort.

I wonder what value human effort will be worth in our commonplace future artificial intelligence world.
