“Write” intentional short science fiction

Field-test your imagined experience idea.

Poke holes in it.

One way to do that is to imagine a future scenario in which your ideal future has been achieved and has since become commonplace. Think twenty years post launch. In what ways are people using your idea then? What has it developed into?

Draft the short story based on today’s facts and theories.

Begin the story with an avatar using the new product, service or result in the future. Consider the way(s) the avatar learned about, provisioned and gained facility with the invention.

Then, introduce into the story a catastrophe related the use or delivery of that product or service (e.g., security, privacy, resilience, etc.). Consider the way(s) in which the invention is supported with labor, equipment, capital and delivery.

End the story with a solution to the catastrophe. Consider necessary partnerships for success.

Don’t be afraid to exploit a bit of hard science in the telling. A detailed plan for fixing the huge issue(s) may add the right amount of depth to make the story both entertaining and educational.
